Outreach·Hope for Aids children

The name Thembalitsha means new hope. Thembalitsha run many projects, but the one we have chosen to get involved with is called The Village of Hope.
The Village of Hope is a care facility for children affected by HIV/Aids set up in the farmland of Grabouw (45 min outside Cape Town, South Africa). Grabouw is a town of 50,000 people with no overnight hospital and over 34% of the population living with Aids.
South African news site News24 has said that around 50,000 of the 100,000 children born in South Africa in 2008 will die before the age of two, not directly due to the HIV/Aids but because there is no-one to look after them!
The Village of Hope is a response to this need. It will not only provide a stable home environment for the children who have nowhere else to go, but will also provide an opportunity to work with the local community, employing local mums and dads to come and care for the children with the vital knowledge of their customs and culture.
- One out of every 12 children born in South Africa today is HIV positive.
- 274 of these children die of HIV/Aids every day.
- The number of these children under 15 years, living with HIV is between 230,000 and 300,000.
The need is great, but together, we can make a difference.
